[{Tojo's Heel}]
Hidecki Tojo declared that Japan held an “Absolute Imperial Defense Line” in December 1943. From the Kuriles through the Marianas, New Guinea, Dutch East Indies to Burma, Tojo’s declaration meant “Defend it at all costs in the name of the beloved Emperor, Hirohito.”

After capturing lodgments in the Gilberts and Marshalls, by mid-1944, the Allies sought a launch base for strategic air strikes against Japan's industrial capacity.
Saipan sat at the center point of a 1500-mile arc covering the home islands of Japan. Capture of the island not only would pierce Tojo’s line of defenses but also support a base for the B-29 Bomber, which could easily traverse a 3,000 mile round trip bombing run against any of Japan’s major production centers.
